Clinical test are not always capable of providing the best data about the amount of magnesium in our body. Only 1% of magnesium is contained in the blood, while 0.3% is found in the serum.
What is the solution? The likelihood of magnesium deficiency in the body is very high if the following symptoms are experienced:
1. DO YOU EXPERIENCE MUSCLE CRAMPS AND MUSCLE PAINS?
These two symptoms are among the most common signs of magnesium deficiency. If the balance of magnesium and calcium is disrupted, it can lead to a higher accumulation rate of calcium in both the blood vessels and muscles. The result is phlebosclerosis (hardened blood vessel walls) and less flexible muscles.
2. DO YOU SUFFER FROM INSOMNIA?
One of the causes of insomnia can be the lack of magnesium in the human brain. Calcium activates the NDMA receptors of the nerve cells, while magnesium has an opposite effect. In the absence of the necessary amount of magnesium, NDMA receptors become more activated, which leads to the overactive function of the brain.
3. DO YOU SUFFER FROM HYPERTENSION? (High Blood pressure)?
Hypertension is a widespread problem among the population, and it makes it a frequently studied area in relation to magnesium deficiency. High blood pressure is a condition triggered by phlebosclerosis. When the walls of the blood vessels shrink, the heart cannot pump enough blood to every part of the body. Numbness is a common symptom. Too much calcium combined with inadequate magnesium levels causes the calcium excess to gather up on the walls of the blood vessels. The blood in the vessels cannot move freely through them, and blood vessels lose a lot of their flexibility. The combination of these two leads to developing high blood pressure.
4. DO YOU HAVE HORMONAL PROBLEMS?
For women, the higher the oestrogen and progesterone levels, the lower the level of magnesium in the body. It is a common condition experienced by pregnant women, or during menstrual cycles. It is the reason why women more often experience leg cramps than men. The craving for chocolate is another effect, and it is a well-established fact that chocolate is high in magnesium.
5. ARE YOU OFTEN LOW ON ENERGY; DO YOU SUFFER FROM GENERAL FEELING OF FATIGUE?
ATP (adenosine-triphosphate) is a nucleotide that provides the chemical energy for the functioning of the cells in our body. In the absence of magnesium, energy production cannot start, and the cells are left without enough energy to function properly. Having not enough energy will lead to a general feeling of fatigue and distress.
6. DO YOU SUFFER FROM OSTEOPOROSIS?
It is a commonly accepted but incorrect belief that calcium plays the primary and most important role in preserving the health of bones. Recently conducted studies have pointed out that magnesium is at least as important (or even more important) for bone strength as calcium.
Calcium needs Vitamin D to build into the bones, but without magnesium, our body cannot produce the vitamin.
Besides its role in Vitamin D production, magnesium also stimulates the production of calcitonin hormone in the thyroid gland. Calcitonin needs magnesium to guide calcium to the bones from the tissues, and without sufficient magnesium levels, osteoporosis can develop.
Would you like to find out about the factors that decrease magnesium levels?
Our lifestyle and dietary habits can show us about magnesium levels in our body.
If your answer to either of the following questions is “yes”, you are in risk of low magnesium levels due to your dietary habits.
1. Do you regularly consume soft drinks?
Soft drinks tend to contain phosphate. In the alimentary canal, phosphate forms a bond with magnesium, and as a result, the body can no longer absorb it. Consuming soft drinks with magnesium-rich meals cancel out the benefits of a healthy diet. Magnesium flushes out from the body with soft drinks.
2. Do you regularly consume sweet pastry products, cakes, sweets, candy or other sweet foods?
Refined sugar does not contain a single drop of magnesium. It also stimulates magnesium secretion in the kidneys. Refined sugar is made from sugarcane. During the production of sugarcane, molasses is chemically removed from it. 100 g of molasses contains about 242 mg of magnesium, and removing it leaves refined sugar with no magnesium at all.
3. Do you have a very stressful lifestyle, or have you recently been through surgey or other medical procedures?
Stress can induce magnesium deficiency, and lack of magnesium tends to induce stress. The outcome is an even more stressful condition.
4. Do you drink coffee, tea, or other beverages containing caffeine on a daily basis?
The kidneys are responsible for regulating the magnesium level in our body. The kidneys secrete the excess amount of minerals, including magnesium. Caffeine induces the secretion of magnesium regardless of the body’s actual magnesium needs.
5. Do you take diuretics, heart medication, medication for asthma, contraceptives or Oestrogen replacements?
Some medications have been proven to decrease the magnesium level in the body by having a stimulating effect on the kidneys to secrete more magnesium.
6. Do you usually drink more than 7 glasses of alcoholic beverages?
Alcohol and diuretics have a similar effect on the magnesium level in the body: they both stimulate magnesium secretion through the kidneys. The results of one particular study showed that 30% of people with alcoholic tendencies have insufficient levels of magnesium, as alcohol decreases the amount of magnesium available for the cells.
7. Do you take calcium supplements that Either do not contain magnesium at all, or ones in which the ratio of magnesium to calcium is lower than 1 to 1?
Studies have demonstrated that a lower level of magnesium intake can decrease the absorption rate of magnesium when calcium is replaced. It shows that calcium supplements can negatively impact magnesium levels. On the other hand, magnesium supplementation improves the body’s ability to use calcium.
IF you answered with “yes” to any of the above questions, and you are at least 55 years old
People of more advanced age generally react very sensitively to low levels of magnesium. Ageing, diseases and stress induce the body’s need of magnesium. At the same time, the diet of older people tends to contain less magnesium.
If you have answered with “yes” to any of the questions, Adequate magnesium intake may be an increasingly pressing concern for you.
